-
Boost flavor and more with Cinnamon
-
Perk up your morning coffee with Ground Cinnamon. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon over ground coffee before brewing
-
For
lightly sweetened, cinnamon-spiced yogurt, mix 1/2 teaspoon Ground
Cinnamon and 1 teaspoon maple syrup or honey into 1 cup plain yogurt.
-
Cinnamon
and apple is a natural flavor combination. A sliced apple tossed with
1/2 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon in a resealable plastic bag makes a great
snack. Plus the cinnamon coating helps keep the apple slices from
turning brown.
-
Keep a shaker of Ground Cinnamon handy to sprinkle over everything from hot cocoa to oatmeal and fruit salad.
-
Keep
Cinnamon Sugar on hand to use as a topping for quick breads, cobblers,
muffins or cookies just before they go into the oven. Mix 1/2 cup
granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon Ground Cinnamon.
-
Spice
up cake mixes with Ground Cinnamon. Add 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon to
angel food or white cake mix. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons to chocolate or
yellow cake mix.
-
Next time you make French toast, pancakes, waffles or muffins, try adding ½ to 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon to the batter.
-
Give
lunchbox sandwiches an unexpected flavor boost. Add a sprinkle of
Ground Cinnamon to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Also tastes
great on peanut butter and banana sandwiches!

Americans making more coffee at home: poll
Sat Mar 21, 2009 4:25pm EDT
By Marcy Nicholson
BOCA RATON, Florida (Reuters) - Daily coffee consumption in the
United States was steady this year compared to 2008, while the number
of people making their coffee at home rose, the National Coffee
Association of U.S.A. said on Saturday.
Data from the 2009 National Coffee Drinking Trends survey, which
polled more than 3,000 adults in the United States by telephone in
January and February, was released at the NCA's annual convention in
Boca Raton, Florida.
"Consumers still see coffee as an integral part of their everyday lives," NCA chief Robert Nelson said.
"Even if economic conditions cause some to alter their coffee
choices, they are nonetheless continuing to enjoy coffee at levels very
much on par with recent years," he said in a release.
Preliminary data showed 54 percent of adults drank coffee beverages
daily, compared to 55 percent a year ago. With the margin of error plus
or minus 1.6 percentage points, the NCA viewed consumption as
statistically flat.
Of the people who said they had drunk coffee the previous day, 83
percent said they had made it at home -- up 5 points compared with
year-ago figures.
"The coffee industry as a whole doesn't seem to be suffering at all,
seems to be recession resilient," said Mark DiDomenico, director of
Customer and Consumer Insights for Sara Lee Foodservice.
"Gourmet coffee is where we saw some of the decline," said
DiDomenico, who presented the survey results on the convention's final
day.
Daily consumption of gourmet coffee, which includes espresso-based
drinks, fell to 14 percent, back to levels seen in 2007, he said. In
2008, this category was at 17 percent.
Another area of decline was from people who said they had drunk
coffee within the past week or year. Coffee consumption in these groups
fell 3 points to 63 percent and 77 percent respectively.
Those numbers suggest some of the less-frequent coffee drinkers might have stopped, the study said.
The NCA survey has been conducted since 1950 and is the longest
available statistical series of consumer coffee drinking patterns,
DiDomenico said.

Good News For Coffee Drinkers: It May Protect Your Liver
By Heather Maloney
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center staff
Can't
live without your morning cup of joe? That may be a good thing: more
and more studies are pointing to the health benefits of our favorite
caffeinated beverage, especially when it comes to warding off liver
disease.
"The first study linking coffee and liver disease appeared about 20 years ago," says Dr. Sanjiv Chopra, a hepatologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
in Boston and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. "The
researchers discovered that coffee drinkers had lower levels of liver
enzymes. Since then, many studies have shown that coffee is amazingly
protective for the liver."

Got latte?
A battle is brewing as fast food chains target coffee concoction
By Leonor Vivanco
RedEye
Melissa Singson, 25, starts her morning with breakfast: no cereal, just a latte.
"It's pretty much the only time of day I get my calcium," said Singson, who lives in Streeterville.
The Northwestern law school student said she orders up the combination
of espresso and steamed milk at least twice a day and supplements her
caffeine addiction with regular coffee throughout the day.
While she said it gets expensive to drink lattes all the time, she finds her preferred coffee drink comforting.

Coffee Drinking Lowers Women's Stroke Risk
Two or more cups a day boosts protection for nonsmokers, study finds
By Alan Mozes
HealthDay Reporter
MONDAY, Feb. 16 (HealthDay News) -- Drinking coffee appears to lower
the risk for stroke among women, with more consumption translating into
more protection, Spanish and American researchers suggest.
The finding stems from the tracking of both coffee habits and stroke
occurrence among tens of thousands of American women across nearly a
quarter century. And it adds to earlier indications that coffee might
also offer some protection against diabetes, while not raising the risk
for heart trouble.
However, the current evidence also includes a cautionary note for
smokers: Their habit seems to wipe out whatever protection long-term
coffee drinking might otherwise confer.
"Many people have been very concerned that coffee might actually be
a risk factor for stroke, that it might, in fact, increase the risk of
stroke," said the study's co-author, Rob M. van Dam, an assistant
professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public
Health, in Boston. "But here we saw that it might end up being
beneficial rather than detrimental."
The findings were released Monday for the March 3 issue of Circulation.

After Starbucks Announce's "No Decaf After Noon" - Caribou Announce's: Free Decaf Friday Afternoon |

Caribou: Free Decaf Friday Afternoon
The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area - by John Vomhof Jr.
A day after Starbucks Corp. said it will continuously brew decaffeinated coffee only until noon to trim costs, Caribou Coffee Co. Inc. responded Thursday by announcing it will give away free decaf. Well, at least for one afternoon.
Brooklyn Center, Minn.-based Caribou (NASDAQ: CBOU) will offer free
12-ounce cups of decaffeinated coffee from noon until close at all of its stores on
Friday. The company has a store at Friendly Center in Greensboro.
"Decaf drinkers deserve better," Caribou Coffee Senior Vice
President of Marketing Alfredo Martel said in a statement. "Caribou
Coffee is first and foremost a coffeehouse, emphasis on coffee. We
strive to give our customers the very best coffee, when, where and how
they want it. And if that means a cup of decaffeinated coffee in the afternoon, then
we're more than happy to oblige."

Just Roasted Coffees - McDonald's Brews A Cuppa Competition |

McDonald's Brews A Cuppa Competition
Sandra Pedicini- Sentinel Staff Writer
Hoping to cash in
on the specialty-coffee market, McDonald's has begun offering lattes,
mochas and cappuccinos in many of its restaurants, including some in
the Orlando area.
By mid-2009, all 186 Central Florida locations plan to offer McCaf
beverages from espresso machines that grind Arabica beans and shoot out
steamed milk with the press of a button.
"They're a little watered down, but they're cheaper than Starbucks,"
said Nikki Roadcap, 27, of Maitland, sipping an iced vanilla latte at a
Maitland McDonald's last week.
McDonald's officials downplay competition with Starbucks, whose name is
synonymous with fancy coffee, trendy stores and high prices.
But in this economy, McDonald's could steal some Starbucks customers
with its cheaper specialty coffees, said Steve West, a
restaurant-industry analyst for Stifel Nicolaus.
"People don't really have the money to go to Starbucks and drop four or
five bucks for a latte and a cappuccino anymore," West said.
